CINCINNATI — Tee Higgins has seen a lot of big offensive linemen in his young NFL career. But he hasn’t see any quite like Amarius Mims when he steps into a huddle.
“He wows me every time he walks in the huddle. This dude is big as hell,” Higgins said after Thursday’s practice, during which Mims had to leave early with an unspecified issue. Mims said after practice it was nothing major and he’ll be back Friday.
“Actually, watching him on film and how he’s doing, the guy’s a stud up front. Great addition to our offense and looking forward to see what he’s gonna do come game one,” Higgins added.
While Mims made only eight starts at Georgia, the Bengals and other NFL teams saw enough from him to realize he was first-round talent. That’s why the Bengals selected him at No. 18 overall. Many in the organization believe he has the talent and character to step in and start right away at right tackle. He just needs the reps and to be tested to see how he responds.
The one Mims trait many in the offense notice is that he acts the role of a starter already.
“No, he definitely doesn’t act like a rookie,” Higgins said. “You can tell he’s professional, been acting like one probably since college. So, man, he’s just a great guy. I’m glad we got him and looking forward to his greatness.”

Asked why Joe Burrow rates Mims so highly, Higgins had some very honest observations. “No disrespect to the guys we’ve had before, but for Joe who’s been beat up in past years,… pic.twitter.com/bgcvqJMCBk

“You can get a feeling, you don’t know percent but my feeling on that guy is pretty good right now,” Burrow said Thursday. His mindset, his athleticism, his size, his willingness to be coached, grow and learn is all A-plus. So the sky’s the limit for that guy, I’m really excited he’s on our team.
Attitude is one thing, talent is another and Higgins can tell that Mims could be a difference maker right away.
“No disrespect to guys we had before but for Joe, who’s been beat up in past years, to say that about a rookie is amazing,” Higgins told me. “So I’m definitely looking forward to seeing him on the field. He’s gonna be he’s gonna be one of the greats here for sure.”
Mims has been taking first team reps at right tackle with Trent Brown still on NFI.
“I’m trying to make the least amount of mistakes as possible and I can tell day-by-day, whether it’s walkthrough or practice, the mistakes are being minimized,” Mims said.
