CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow knows full well where the burden of responsibility lies for the Super Bowl aspirations of these 2026 Bengals.

After an offseason that saw the front office commit over $200 million to rebuilding its defense, adding Dexter Lawrence II, Jonathan Allen, Bryan Cook, BOye Mafe and Kyle Dugger and re-sign starting right guard Dalton Risner, that burden squarely on his shoulders and those of his teammates.

But the funny thing is – judging from Wednesday’s first offseason gathering with the media – he’s not only accepting the challenge, he’s fully confident he can make all sorts of history in the process.

This is the confident Joe Burrow that Bengals fans, coaches and teammates have been waiting to see, the supremely talented quarterback who believes so strongly in the team he’s leading that they’ll be able to not only win games but finally break through and win a championship. He told the media that he didn’t have his annual end-of-season meeting with Duke Tobin and Bengals front office officials, opting instead to stay in touch through free agency and stay out of the way and let them do their job.

Burrow put his trust in the front office to do what was absolutely necessary to turn around a disastrous 2025 campaign and show that they are committed to winning a Super Bowl (or more) in his prime years in Cincinnati. Much was written last year about his body language. Much was interpreted from his lack of joy in playing football when he was going through the midseason grind of coming back from his turf toe surgery, only to return to a mediocre roster incapable of making a playoff run when he came back against the Ravens on Thanksgiving night.

Simply put, the responsibility now lies with the players.

“Yeah, I would say that’s fair to say,” Burrow told me. “The front office has taken a lot of heat from the fans, the public, the media. We can put all of that behind us. They went and made it happen with free agency. I thought the draft, obviously we’ll find out. We don’t know a ton about these rookies yet, but it seems like they brought the right kind of guys in. And then obviously with Dexter, making a trade like that, that doesn’t happen a ton in the NFL. So it’s exciting to see.”

The roster rebuild was given the seal of approval from No. 9.

“Certainly. No matter who we have in the locker room, we’re going to try to go out and make it work,” Burrow continued. “We got guys that work really hard to put themselves in position to perform well, perform to our standard. We haven’t necessarily done that for a couple of years, so we brought some guys in who have been there and done that and have their own standard of play and are going to live up to that. Now we just have to come together as a unit and do it as a collective.”

This was classic Burrow from start to finish: calm, cool and collected, without a blink of the eye or hesitation in his voice. He sat – slightly laid back – in his chair on the dais Wednesday and told the audience the following:

  • This is the most talented roster the Bengals have had in his time in Cincinnati.
  • This team will win a lot of games.
  • This team will win a Super Bowl.
  • He is fully capable of throwing 48 touchdown passes this season to pass the 204 of Andy Dalton and set a new all-time franchise record.
  • He is capable of putting forth the type of season that can earn him his first NFL MVP.
  • Joe Burrow is the most calculating player and leader on the Bengals. He doesn’t just throw stuff out there unless he believes what he’s saying. While there are obviously no guarantees of any of the above taking place, he certainly wouldn’t just be randomly throwing stuff against the wall for the sake of promotional billboards and social media posts.

He’s doing it because he’s setting the standard early this year. After missing the postseason for the last three years due to defensive struggles and injuries, Burrow’s remarks signaled a complete shift in organizational momentum.

The media availability offered a comprehensive look into Burrow’s physical health, personal goals, and glowing evaluation of a revitalized front office.

Takeaway 1: Unprecedented Confidence in Roster Talent
The central storyline from Burrow’s press conference was his definitive declaration regarding the team’s depth. “I think this is the most talented roster that we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Burrow stated bluntly. This statement carries immense weight considering Burrow previously guided the 2021 Bengals to Super Bowl LVI. In his assessment, the 2026 squad eclipses that baseline. He credited the front office with executing a highly aggressive, modern offseason designed to plug glaring weaknesses. Rather than shying away from the expectations that come with such praise, Burrow leaned entirely into them, that the team is ready to deliver a Lombardi Trophy to Cincinnati. “We’re gonna go win a lot of games this year and play great and win a Super Bowl,” he added.

Takeaway 2: Defense Revitalized by Aggressive Front Office
For years, Cincinnati’s management faced criticism for its conservative approach to free agency and trades. Burrow used his platform on Wednesday to explicitly vindicate general manager Duke Tobin and the front office.Defending Management: Burrow acknowledged the external pressure the front office faced, stating, “The front office has taken a lot of heat from the fans, the public, the media. We can put all of that behind us. They went and made it happen.”Acquisition of Elite Personnel: Burrow noted that the Bengals secured top-tier talent on the defensive side of the ball, explicitly praising the addition of safety Bryan Cook as the “best free agent safety” and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence as the “best D-tackle in the league.”

Impact of Blockbuster Trades: Reflecting on the trade that brought Lawrence from the New York Giants in exchange for the 10th overall pick, Burrow admitted he was “fired up” when the news broke. He emphasized how rare such aggressive trades are in the NFL, adding that finding a rookie at pick 10 with more immediate impact than Lawrence would have been nearly impossible.

Takeaway 3: Defensive Line Depth Alters Locker Room Vibe
Burrow elaborated on how the structural changes to the defense have altered the team’s daily environment. The additions of veteran edge rusher Boye Mafe and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen have reshaped the depth chart. According to Burrow, being “four deep” at every position across the defensive line shifts the operational reality of the team. The rotational depth means star players do not have to absorb excessive snap counts, keeping them fresh for late-game situations.Burrow highlighted that this newly established veteran standard has trickled down to younger players, noting that third-year edge rusher Myles Murphy is already walking around the facility with “more pep in his step” due to a surge in confidence.

Takeaway 4: Individual Records and MVP Ambitions Are “Doable”
With an elite surrounding cast, Burrow is setting massive individual statistical targets for the 2026 campaign. When reporters asked if he was chasing any milestone marks, Burrow brought up the Bengals’ franchise career passing touchdown record.Burrow enters the season sitting 47 touchdown passes behind Andy Dalton’s career franchise record of 204. Throwing 48 touchdowns in a single season is an elite milestone achieved by only a handful of quarterbacks in NFL history. Yet, when confronted with the exact math, Burrow offered his trademark swagger, responding with a simple, one-word assessment:”Doable.” He openly acknowledged that reaching this number would naturally align with his long-term ambition of winning a league MVP award, cementing his return to the absolute peak of the sport.

Takeaway 5: Offensive Continuity and Schedule Perceptions
While the defense saw a major overhaul, Burrow expressed immense relief regarding the offensive line’s continuity. All five starting offensive linemen return for 2026, reinforced by new deals for veterans like Orlando Brown Jr. and Dalton Risner. Burrow explained that returning an identical, veteran blocking unit gives him a “great feeling” ahead of training camp.

Additionally, Burrow shared an unexpected perspective on the Bengals’ unique 2026 regular-season schedule layout. Cincinnati will open the year with seven consecutive games in the 1:00 p.m. ET broadcast window. While fans often clamor for primetime slots, Burrow explained that early games are highly beneficial for the players. Finishing early on Sunday allows the team to return home safely, rest, and watch afternoon and evening game tape of their upcoming opponents. It provides an edge in analyzing evolving defensive trends across the league.

The overarching takeaway from Wednesday’s press conference is that the era of patience in Cincinnati is officially over. By publicly grading this roster as the most talented of his career, Burrow has effectively eliminated any remaining excuses regarding lack of support, coaching, or organizational spending.

The front office answered his calls for defensive help by spending right up to the salary cap. Burrow’s words represent the ultimate vote of confidence in his teammates, but they also welcome an intense amount of championship pressure. With voluntary OTAs underway and mandatory minicamp on the horizon, Burrow and the Bengals have explicitly made it clear that anything short of a Super Bowl victory in 2026 will be considered a failure.
